Hospitality Design’s HD Expo Welcomes Thousands to Explore the Hospitality Industry’s Best and Most Innovative Designs
LAS VEGAS, NV (May 2, 2018)—HD Expo opened its doors to welcome thousands of eager exhibitors, attendees and media today. The dynamic show floor exhibitions coupled with the engaging conference content geared to the hospitality industry’s professionals was a rousing success. HD Expo will run from May 2–4 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.
Kick-off content included a lively panel discussion with design firm Meyer Davis, the designers of this year’s Social Hub. The Social Hub’s featured principal designers were Gray Davis and Will Meyers. Stacy Shoemaker Rauen, editor in chief of Hospitality Design magazine, moderated the panel, which gave attendees the behind-the-scenes inspiration for this year’s Social Hub. With a focus on achieving effortless design while maintaining luxury, the design duo explained, “It takes a lot of effort to make things look effortless.”
“There are opportunities to rethink everything in the hospitality world thanks to inspiring products,” said Meyer Davis. “This is why we come to HD Expo.”
The opening conference session featured design power couple, Jonathan Adler and Simon Doonan. Moderated by Michael Adams, editorial director of Hospitality Design magazine, Doonan, the renowned Barney’s window dresser and Adler, potter/retail mogul, described what they love about designing for hospitality and enlightened the crowd with detailing the challenges. Both agree that hospitality design allows for an opportunity to be dramatic and theatrical, and that, “creativity—along with hard work,” said Jonathan Adler, “can lead to design perfection.”
Doonan announced his new television show, Making It, which debuts July 31 on CBS.
Wrapping up day one of HD Expo was the Box/Hilton Design Challenge panel discussion, featuring Bobby Berk, Anthony Melchiorri, Larry Traxler, Leo Eskanazi and the 2018 design winners of the Box Challenge, Chapi Chapo design. The challenge tasked twelve design firms to create—in a 24-hour time frame— the “dream guestroom.” The panelists and moderator, Stacy Shoemaker Rauen, then invited attendees to view the winning design at booth #1883—where attendees congratulated the challenge winners, Chapi Chapo Design, with a champagne toast.
